Combined Method: Combine both techniques described above. It makes use of the art of Bass and then sweeps the gums and teeth using the rotational technique.

Recommendations: Do not forget brushing the tongue and palate. A good brushing should last at least 3 minutes.

However, in those days Europeans preferred softer toothbrushes made with horsehair.  It was also common to clean teeth after lunch with a feather of birds or to use toothpicks of bronze or silver.  Perhaps the oldest method to brush their teeth was with a piece of cloth, which was used in Europe since Roman times.  In any case, the brushes were not popular in the Western world until the nineteenth century.

A nylon material, thanks to the launch made by Du Pont in 1938, replaced the natural (pork hair) bristles.  The nylon had several advantages over the bristles of animals: it was rigid, retaining its shape and was not attacked by moisture, avoiding the risk of infections. However, bristles at the beginning were so rigid that they caused serious inconvenience to users, which led to Du Pont to launch soft nylon bristles.

The toothpaste is the paste that is generally added to the brush to clean teeth.

In January 2003 the electric toothbrush was selected as the invention without which Americans could not live, surpassing the automobile, computer, microwave and mobile phone according to the index of inventions of MIT.

Brushing Techniques

There are several techniques for brushing:

Technical rotation: the technique is the best known. The bristles of the brush are placed against the surface of the teeth, brushing your teeth superiors must rotate the brush down and brushing teeth should lower the rotating brush upwards, so that the sides of the bristles brush both gum and teeth arched in a movement. The premolars and molars are brushing through a scratching movement on their surfaces.

Technical Bass: In this technique the brush is placed at an angle of 45 degrees against the union of the tooth with gum, then makes a horizontal movement to remove the plaque. For the internal faces of the upper and lower incisors, brush with the brush vertically. The surface and chewing molars and premolars are brushed with rubbing movements forwards and backwards.

The toothbrush is an elongated handle with a brush used for brushing teeth, with a view to cleaning.  Many traditional cultures around the world have cleaned their teeth by rubbing tree branches or pieces of wood since time immemorial. They have also been rubbed with chalk or hot soda.

According to the American Dental Association, the first toothbrush was created in 1498 by a Chinese emperor who put pork bristles in a shank bone. The merchants who were visiting China introduced the brush while among Europeans, but toothbrushes were not very common in the West until the seventeenth century.

Electric toothbrushes

The first electric toothbrush, Broxodent, was introduced by Squibb Pharmaceutical on the centennial of the American Dental Association in 1959.  Shortly later General Electric created the cordless electric toothbrush, powered by batteries.

In 1987 it came the sale of the electric rotary brush Interplak, which marked a new breakthrough.

The electric toothbrush that vibrates more frequently is the Philips Sonicare. This makes brush bristles vibrate through a variable magnetic field that acts on magnets attached to the bristles.  This product allows the brush to get the mixture of water and toothpaste among interproximal spaces (spaces between tooth and tooth).

No brush can clean the entire interproximal space. Only a proper daily use of dental floss can completely wipe this space.
